(We May Be a Bit Late) Let’s Celebrate World Smile Day Everyday!

added on: November 11, 2021

Your dentists in The Woodlands have been so busy taking care of teeth that somehow we missed World Smile Day® this year, as it’s generally celebrated on the first Friday of October. The theme for 2021 was “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” We figured that a message like this should be relevant for us all on any given day, not just for a special occasion.

Join your Woodlands dentists for a bit of history and humor.

How This Day Came to Be

The story behind World Smile Day® starts with Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who created the iconic smiley face back in 1963. Today, the yellow face is still an iconic symbol of happiness and goodwill around the world. However, as time went on, Harvey grew concerned about the symbol losing its true meaning as it was being repeated everywhere. This was how World Smile Day® started, the first celebration being held in 1999. Harvey thought that “we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, geography, or religion.” Your Woodlands dentists couldn’t agree more!

Top 3 Benefits of Smiling on Your Body

Keep the positivity flowing every day when you understand the many benefits smiling can have physically and mentally. Here are your Woodlands dentists top three favorite benefits you’re going to love:

1) Boost your Mental Health – Smiling is proven to release endorphins, elevating your mental exertion and capacity. It can relieve unnecessary tension and will make you feel better about yourself and the world around you.

2) Boost Your Immunity – We all need to stay as healthy and happy as possible these days, so remember to smile. It can help calm down your muscles and provide relaxation. Smiling has been known to reduce stress and anxiety, which can weaken your immune system.

3) Boost Your Mood – Your body releases endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine when you smile. This rush of hormones helps you feel a whole new level of happiness, and you’ll stress less and maybe feel a little euphoric.
